If you want to characterize someone, the portrait is a visual translation of that person. But individuals consists of so much more. People can also express themselves by showing their home: the furnishings, the wall decorations, and the collected treasures from travels and legacies, or just flea markets. An amalgamation of very personal possessions, built up over a long period of time. Jaap wanted to show the models in conjunction with their familiar surroundings in order to give a more nuanced picture of those portrayed.
